C-Peptide Normalization

Meaning

C-Peptide Normalization refers to the clinical and physiological process of restoring circulating C-peptide concentrations to within a healthy, non-diabetic reference range. C-peptide is a byproduct of proinsulin cleavage, released in equimolar amounts with endogenous insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. Normalization indicates improved endogenous insulin production and secretion relative to the body’s metabolic demands. This marker is vital for assessing residual beta-cell function and differentiating between type 1 and type 2 diabetes or assessing the success of insulin-sensitizing therapies.
