Butyrate Metabolism

Meaning

Butyrate metabolism is the biochemical process involving the synthesis, utilization, and breakdown of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), predominantly within the gastrointestinal tract and peripheral tissues. This critical metabolic activity is primarily carried out by specific anaerobic gut bacteria fermenting dietary fiber. The resulting butyrate serves as the principal energy source for colonocytes and acts as a signaling molecule throughout the body.
