Bulk Drug Substance

Meaning

A Bulk Drug Substance, also scientifically termed an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), is the raw, pharmacologically active component intended to furnish the therapeutic effect in a final compounded or manufactured drug product. This substance is the chemical foundation of the medication, directly responsible for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. In the context of hormonal therapy, it refers to the pure, unformulated hormone, such as bioidentical testosterone or estradiol, which must meet stringent regulatory standards for purity and quality before formulation.
