Breast Tissue Proliferation

Meaning

The process of rapid and increased multiplication of cells within the mammary gland tissue, specifically the epithelial and stromal cells. This physiological event is primarily driven by the cyclic stimulation of estrogen and progesterone, especially during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and during pregnancy. While a normal, necessary process, excessive or uncontrolled proliferation is a clinical concern as it may increase the risk of developing breast pathologies. Monitoring proliferation markers is a key aspect of managing hormonal therapies in certain patient populations.
