BRCA Carriers

Meaning

BRCA Carriers are individuals who possess a pathogenic mutation in one of the BRCA genes, specifically BRCA1 or BRCA2, which are tumor suppressor genes. These genetic alterations significantly increase a person’s lifetime risk of developing several cancers, most notably breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. While the mutation is inherited, its presence does not guarantee cancer development, but rather represents a substantial genetic predisposition requiring rigorous surveillance and prophylactic measures. Understanding carrier status is fundamental for personalized risk management.
