Origin
The discovery of these rhythmic neural oscillations originated with the invention of the electroencephalogram (EEG) by Hans Berger in the 1920s, who first identified the Alpha rhythm. Theta waves were later characterized in the mid-20th century, with subsequent neurofeedback research establishing the combined Alpha-Theta state as a marker for deep, non-ordinary states of consciousness. The naming convention is based on the Greek alphabet, ordered by decreasing frequency.
Mechanism
The simultaneous presence of Alpha and Theta activity reflects a temporary neurological disinhibition, where the brain shifts its processing from external attention to internal, subconscious work. Alpha waves are generated primarily by the thalamus and cortex, serving to quiet irrelevant sensory input, which is a process known as cortical idling. The slower Theta waves, originating partly from the hippocampus, facilitate the heightened plasticity necessary for learning and memory encoding during this deeply relaxed yet internally focused state.
