Brain Receptors

Meaning

Specialized protein structures embedded within the cell membranes or cytoplasm of neurons and glial cells throughout the central nervous system. These receptors are the primary binding sites for neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and other signaling molecules, mediating communication between brain cells. Their activation or inhibition dictates the brain’s response to both endogenous and exogenous compounds, profoundly influencing mood, cognition, and endocrine feedback loops.
