Brain Oxygen Supply

Meaning

Brain Oxygen Supply denotes the essential physiological process of delivering sufficient molecular oxygen, which is transported by hemoglobin in the blood, to the cerebral tissue to meet its intense metabolic demands. Consistent and adequate oxygenation is critically important because the brain possesses very limited capacity for energy generation via anaerobic metabolism. A constant, uninterrupted oxygen supply is required for oxidative phosphorylation, and compromise rapidly leads to neuronal dysfunction and cell damage.
