Brain Insulin Signaling

Meaning

Brain insulin signaling refers to the cascade of molecular events initiated when the hormone insulin binds to its specific receptors expressed on neurons and glial cells within the central nervous system. Unlike its primary peripheral role in glucose uptake, insulin in the brain modulates neuronal survival, synaptic function, and energy balance. Impairment of this signaling pathway, often termed brain insulin resistance, is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor in cognitive decline and neurodegenerative pathology.
