Brain Extracellular Space

Meaning

The Brain Extracellular Space (ECS) is the narrow, fluid-filled compartment surrounding neurons and glial cells within the central nervous system parenchyma. This interstitial space constitutes approximately 15-20% of the total brain volume and is the crucial microenvironment for all neuronal-glial communication. It acts as the primary conduit for the diffusion and transport of nutrients, neuromodulators, waste products, and hormones throughout the brain tissue.
