Bone Remodeling

Meaning

Bone remodeling is the continuous, lifelong process where mature bone tissue is removed, a process called resorption, and new bone tissue is formed, known as ossification. This dynamic equilibrium is essential for maintaining skeletal integrity, repairing micro-damage, and regulating calcium and phosphate homeostasis in the body. The entire cycle is tightly regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, including parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and sex steroids like estrogen and testosterone. A disruption in this delicate balance can lead to conditions such as osteoporosis.
