Bone Multicellular Unit

Meaning

The Bone Multicellular Unit (BMU) is a temporary anatomical structure responsible for the continuous remodeling process in adult bone, balancing bone resorption and formation. This unit is crucial for maintaining skeletal integrity and systemic calcium homeostasis, processes highly regulated by parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, and sex steroids. Dysregulation of the BMU’s function is a central mechanism underlying conditions like osteoporosis, which is often linked to hormonal decline.
