Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

Meaning

Bone Mineral Density, or BMD, is a quantitative clinical measurement of the amount of mineralized tissue, primarily calcium and phosphate, contained within a specific volume of bone tissue. It is the established clinical gold standard for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing an individual’s risk of fracture. This metric reflects the structural integrity and strength of the skeletal system. BMD measurements are typically reported as T-scores or Z-scores following a Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) scan.
