Bone Metabolism

Meaning

Bone metabolism refers to the continuous, dynamic process of bone remodeling, which involves the coordinated activity of bone formation and bone resorption to maintain skeletal integrity and mineral homeostasis. This essential physiological cycle is governed by specialized cells: osteoblasts are responsible for synthesizing new bone matrix, while osteoclasts break down old bone tissue. A healthy balance between these two processes is crucial for maintaining bone strength, repairing micro-damage, and regulating the systemic levels of calcium and phosphate. Imbalances, often influenced by hormonal shifts or nutritional deficiencies, can lead to conditions like osteoporosis.
