Bone Marrow Suppression

Meaning

Bone marrow suppression, clinically termed myelosuppression, is a pathological state characterized by a functional decrease in the production of all major blood cell lines by the hematopoietic tissue within the bone marrow. This condition results in pancytopenia, which includes anemia (red blood cell deficit), leukopenia (white blood cell deficit), and thrombocytopenia (platelet deficit). It severely compromises the body’s capacity for oxygen transport, immunity, and hemostasis.
