Body Mass Index (BMI)

Meaning

Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a widely used clinical screening tool that calculates a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. It provides a simple, quantitative measure to categorize individuals into weight status categories, such as underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity. While useful for population health statistics and initial risk assessment, BMI is recognized as an imperfect proxy for body fat percentage and metabolic health. Clinicians use it as a starting point, often alongside more detailed body composition analysis and hormonal profiling.
