Body Composition Gut Flora

Meaning

This term describes the direct and indirect influence exerted by the microbial community residing in the gastrointestinal tract, known as the gut flora or microbiome, on the distribution and ratio of lean mass to fat mass in the human body. The diversity and functional capacity of these microbes are recognized as critical determinants of metabolic efficiency and adiposity. Clinically, an imbalanced gut flora is often correlated with increased visceral fat accumulation and altered energy homeostasis.
