Blood-Testis Barrier

Meaning

The Blood-Testis Barrier (BTB) is a specialized anatomical and physiological structure within the seminiferous tubules of the testes that strictly controls the passage of substances from the bloodstream into the adluminal compartment where meiosis and spermatogenesis occur. This tight barrier, formed by Sertoli cells, creates an immunologically privileged environment essential for protecting developing germ cells from systemic immune surveillance and potentially harmful circulating agents. It is a critical component of male reproductive physiology.
