Blood-Brain Barrier Strength

Meaning

Blood-Brain Barrier Strength refers to the functional integrity and selective permeability of the highly specialized neurovascular unit that protects the central nervous system from circulating substances in the blood. A robust barrier is characterized by tight junctions between endothelial cells, preventing the non-selective passage of toxins, pathogens, and inflammatory molecules into the brain parenchyma. Compromised strength, often termed “leakiness,” can contribute to neuroinflammation and dysregulation of central neuroendocrine control.
