Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction

Meaning

A pathological condition characterized by the compromise of the highly selective semipermeable barrier that separates the circulating blood from the brain and extracellular fluid in the central nervous system (CNS). This structural and functional failure allows for uncontrolled passage of substances, including hormones, immune cells, and toxins, into the delicate neural environment. Such dysfunction is implicated in various neurodegenerative and hormonal disorders, profoundly impacting CNS homeostasis.
