Bipolar Androgen Therapy

Meaning

Bipolar Androgen Therapy (BAT) is an experimental clinical strategy, primarily investigated in the context of prostate cancer treatment, which involves alternating cycles of very high-dose testosterone administration with periods of androgen deprivation. This approach is designed to stress and potentially kill prostate cancer cells that have become resistant to traditional continuous androgen deprivation therapy. The rapid fluctuation between supraphysiological and castrate levels of androgens aims to exploit the cancer cell’s dependency on androgen receptor signaling. It represents a novel paradigm in hormonal oncology, seeking to resensitize tumor cells to subsequent treatments.
