Biotransformation

Meaning

Biotransformation is the essential metabolic process by which the body chemically alters endogenous compounds, such as hormones, or exogenous substances, including medications and toxins, into different forms. This critical physiological function, primarily executed by the liver, modifies the compound’s structure to facilitate its excretion from the body. The resulting metabolites can be either more or less biologically active than the parent compound, significantly impacting hormonal balance and therapeutic efficacy.
