Biosimilar

Meaning

A biosimilar is a biological product that is highly similar to an already approved biological product, known as the reference product, with no clinically meaningful differences in terms of safety, purity, and potency. Unlike chemically synthesized small-molecule drugs, biological products, which often include hormones and therapeutic proteins, are large, complex molecules derived from living systems. The development of a biosimilar aims to provide a therapeutic equivalent after the reference product’s patent expiration, expanding patient access to essential biological therapies.
