The term “biophilia” was popularized by the eminent biologist E.O. Wilson in the 1980s, who posited that our deep-seated connection to nature is genetically programmed. Biophilic Design emerged as the pragmatic application of this theory within the design professions, seeking to quantify and utilize the psychological and physiological benefits of nature exposure. While the practice of integrating nature into human settlements is ancient, the modern, evidence-based framework is rooted in environmental psychology and neuroendocrinology, recognizing the profound impact of the environment on human stress response.
Mechanism
The design operates by influencing the neuroendocrine system, primarily through the reduction of sympathetic nervous system activation and the enhancement of parasympathetic tone. Exposure to natural daylight, for instance, helps entrain the body’s circadian rhythm, which is crucial for the appropriate timing of cortisol and melatonin secretion. Visual and auditory contact with natural elements has been shown to rapidly lower heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension, effectively reducing the allostatic load on the body.
