Biomarker versus Genetic Data

Meaning

This distinction contrasts measurable indicators of current biological status, known as biomarkers, with inherited information dictating potential physiological traits, referred to as genetic data. Biomarkers are quantifiable molecular or physiological characteristics that reflect an active biological process, pathogenic process, or pharmacologic response to an intervention. Genetic data, conversely, represents the static, inherited blueprint of DNA sequences, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or gene mutations. Understanding this difference is critical for personalized medicine, as one reflects present function and the other lifelong predisposition.
