Biological Reserve Capacity

Meaning

The maximal functional capacity remaining within a physiological system, such as the endocrine axis, above the level required for basal metabolic maintenance. This reserve reflects the system’s ability to respond to acute stress or increased physiological demand without immediately failing or shifting into a pathological state. In endocrinology, it quantifies the excess capacity of hormone production or receptor sensitivity available for mobilization. A diminished reserve signals reduced resilience against perturbations to hormonal homeostasis.
