Biologic License Application

Meaning

A Biologic License Application, or BLA, is a formal request submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to seek permission to introduce a biological product into interstate commerce. Biologics, unlike conventional small-molecule drugs, are complex products derived from living sources, such as vaccines, blood products, and certain hormonal therapies. This extensive application must demonstrate the product’s safety, purity, potency, and effectiveness through comprehensive clinical trial data and manufacturing information.
