Bioelectric Potential

Meaning

Bioelectric potential refers to the difference in electrical charge across a cell membrane, known as the membrane potential, which is fundamental to all cellular communication and function. This electrochemical gradient is generated by the differential concentration of ions, such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, inside and outside the cell. The maintenance and controlled manipulation of this potential are vital for excitable cells, including neurons and muscle cells, to transmit signals and execute physiological responses. Clinical assessment of cellular vitality often involves indirect measurement of these underlying electrical properties.
