Biochemical Cofactors

Meaning

Biochemical Cofactors are non-protein chemical compounds or metal ions that are essential for the catalytic activity of numerous enzymes, including those crucial for hormone synthesis and metabolism. These helper molecules facilitate biochemical transformations by assisting in the transfer of atoms, electrons, or functional groups between substrate molecules. Without adequate cofactors, the corresponding enzymes, which are themselves proteins, remain inactive, thus disrupting vital physiological pathways.
