Bioavailable Hormone Levels

Meaning

Bioavailable hormone levels represent the fraction of a specific circulating hormone that is unbound to plasma proteins or loosely bound to albumin, making it readily accessible to diffuse into target tissues and exert its biological effects. This pool is distinct from the total hormone level, which includes the tightly bound, biologically inactive fraction, primarily bound to Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG). Measuring the bioavailable level provides a more accurate assessment of the hormone’s true functional status at the cellular receptor site. Clinical interpretation relies on this metric to gauge tissue exposure and guide precise hormone replacement therapy dosing.
