Bioavailable Androgens

Meaning

Bioavailable androgens represent the fraction of total circulating male sex hormones, primarily testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), that are not tightly bound to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) or albumin. This specific measurement reflects the portion of the hormone pool that is readily accessible to target tissues for biological action. Clinically, assessing bioavailable androgen levels offers a more accurate picture of a patient’s true hormonal status and its physiological impact than measuring total testosterone alone.
