Binding affinity is the quantitative measure of the strength of interaction between a ligand, such as a hormone or peptide, and its specific receptor protein on or within a cell. This intrinsic biochemical property dictates how tightly and for how long a hormone will remain associated with its target receptor site. High affinity implies a strong, prolonged interaction, which often correlates with greater biological potency. Conversely, low affinity suggests a weaker, transient association, necessitating higher hormone concentrations to elicit a response.
