Bilirubin

Meaning

Bilirubin is a yellowish pigment formed as a breakdown product of heme, which is primarily derived from the catabolism of senescent red blood cells in the reticuloendothelial system. It serves as a key clinical marker of liver function and the body’s capacity to process and eliminate waste products, specifically those related to erythrocyte turnover. While high levels are associated with jaundice and hepatobiliary dysfunction, recent research highlights its potent antioxidant properties at physiological concentrations, suggesting a dual role in human health.
