Bile Salt Export Pump

Meaning

The Bile Salt Export Pump, or BSEP (ABCB11), is a pivotal protein transporter situated on the canalicular membrane of liver cells, the hepatocytes. This pump is fundamentally responsible for actively secreting bile salts from the liver into the bile ducts, representing the rate-limiting step in bile flow. Optimal BSEP activity is indispensable for effective hepatic detoxification processes, particularly the necessary clearance and elimination of conjugated, metabolized steroid hormones, including estrogen and thyroid hormone byproducts.
