Bile Acid Binding

Meaning

Bile acid binding refers to the process where certain non-absorbable compounds, typically polymeric resins, form an insoluble complex with bile acids within the gastrointestinal lumen. This physical association prevents the normal reabsorption of bile acids back into the enterohepatic circulation, thereby increasing their fecal excretion. The primary objective of this mechanism is to modulate lipid metabolism or manage conditions related to bile acid excess.
