Bilateral Adrenal Hyperplasia

Meaning

Bilateral Adrenal Hyperplasia (BAH) is a clinical condition characterized by the abnormal, symmetrical enlargement of both adrenal glands, the small organs situated atop the kidneys. This non-cancerous growth results from the proliferation of cortical cells within the adrenal tissue. The physiological consequence is typically the overproduction of steroid hormones, often mineralocorticoids like aldosterone, or sometimes glucocorticoids like cortisol. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for distinguishing BAH from other forms of hyperaldosteronism or Cushing’s syndrome.
