BH3 Mimetics

Meaning

BH3 Mimetics are a class of small-molecule therapeutic agents specifically engineered to replicate the pro-apoptotic action of the BCL-2 homology domain 3 (BH3)-only proteins. These compounds directly bind to and inhibit the function of anti-apoptotic proteins like BCL-2, BCL-xL, and MCL-1, which normally prevent programmed cell death. Their primary role is to re-sensitize dysfunctional cells to the intrinsic apoptotic pathway, a process critical for cellular quality control and the removal of senescent cells. Clinically, this mechanism is being explored in longevity science and targeted cancer therapy to eliminate undesirable cell populations.
