Beta-Glucans

Meaning

Beta-glucans are complex polysaccharides, specifically D-glucose polymer units, found within the cell walls of various organisms, including fungi, yeasts, and cereal grains like oats and barley, distinguished by their unique beta-glycosidic linkages. These linkages, unlike alpha-glycosidic bonds, render them largely indigestible by human enzymes, contributing to their functional properties within the gastrointestinal tract. Their structural diversity, influenced by source, determines their biological activity.
