Beta-Cell Exhaustion

Meaning

Beta-cell exhaustion describes the state of functional impairment and eventual failure of the pancreatic beta-cells, primarily due to chronic overstimulation from persistent insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. This condition is characterized by a diminished capacity to synthesize, store, and secrete sufficient insulin to maintain euglycemia. It is a key pathophysiological feature contributing to the progression of prediabetes to overt type 2 diabetes.
