Beta Cell Apoptosis

Meaning

Beta cell apoptosis describes the programmed, controlled cellular death of the insulin-producing beta cells located within the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. This process is a critical event in the pathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes and plays a significant role in the progression of Type 2 diabetes. The selective loss of these cells severely compromises the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose homeostasis. Understanding the molecular signals that trigger this cell loss is central to developing therapeutic interventions for diabetes.
