Benzodiazepines

Meaning

Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive medications functioning as central nervous system depressants, primarily utilized for their anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. These compounds exert their therapeutic effects by enhancing the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid, commonly known as GABA, which is the brain’s principal inhibitory neurotransmitter. Their chemical structure allows for interaction with specific receptor sites within neuronal membranes.
