Bcl-2 Pathway

Meaning

The Bcl-2 Pathway refers to the intricate regulatory network involving the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family of proteins, which primarily governs programmed cell death, known as apoptosis. This pathway maintains cellular equilibrium by balancing pro-apoptotic members, such as Bax and Bak, that promote cell demise, with anti-apoptotic members like Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, which inhibit it. The relative abundance and activity of these proteins determine a cell’s ultimate survival or decision to undergo controlled elimination.
