Basic Rest-Activity Cycle

Meaning

The Basic Rest-Activity Cycle (BRAC) is an ultradian rhythm, distinct from the 24-hour circadian cycle, which describes the approximately 90-120 minute oscillation between states of higher alertness and lower physiological activity, most notably observed during sleep. This cycle governs fluctuations in various biological processes, including hormone secretion, gastric motility, and cognitive performance throughout the day. Recognizing and aligning daily activities with these natural cycles is key to optimizing energy utilization and preventing unnecessary hormonal stress. The BRAC is a fundamental expression of the body’s intrinsic rhythmicity.
