Bacteriostatic Water

Meaning

Bacteriostatic water is a specialized sterile water preparation intended for injection that includes a specific concentration of a bacteriostatic agent, most commonly benzyl alcohol. This formulation is clinically necessary for the safe reconstitution of powdered medications, such as certain peptide hormones, that require multiple withdrawals from the same vial over a period of use. The bacteriostatic agent is added specifically to inhibit the proliferation of any bacteria that might be introduced into the solution after the vial is initially punctured.
