Axonal Health

Meaning

Axonal health describes the optimal structural integrity and functional efficiency of the axons, which are the long, slender projections of nerve cells (neurons) responsible for transmitting electrochemical impulses away from the cell body. Maintaining robust axonal health is critical for efficient communication across the nervous system, impacting everything from motor control to complex cognitive processes. Compromised axonal function, known as axonopathy, can severely impair neurological signaling and is a feature of various neurodegenerative conditions.
