Autonomy Deprivation Syndrome

Meaning

A clinically-relevant state characterized by chronic activation of the stress response systems, particularly the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, resulting from a perceived or actual lack of control over one’s environment or decisions. This psychological and physiological mismatch leads to allostatic load, which is the cumulative wear and tear on the body from chronic stress. The resulting hormonal imbalance, notably dysregulated cortisol patterns, can profoundly impact metabolic function, immune surveillance, and overall endocrine health.
