Autonomic Resilience

Meaning

Autonomic Resilience denotes the capacity of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) to rapidly and effectively adapt to internal and external stressors, maintaining or quickly returning to physiological homeostasis. This measure of adaptability reflects the dynamic, high-quality interplay between the sympathetic (activating) and parasympathetic (calming) branches of the nervous system. High resilience is characterized by a flexible heart rate variability (HRV) and efficient energy expenditure, indicating robust allostatic capacity. Clinically, it suggests a system that can handle stress without drifting into chronic dysregulation.
