Autonomic Nervous System Balance

Meaning

The state of optimal physiological equilibrium between the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), responsible for the “fight or flight” response, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which governs “rest and digest” functions. Maintaining this balance is crucial for regulating involuntary bodily processes, including heart rate variability, digestion, respiration, and the secretion of stress hormones like cortisol. Dysregulation of this system often manifests as chronic stress and negatively impacts overall endocrine function.
