Autoimmunity

Meaning

Autoimmunity is a state of immune system dysregulation where the body mistakenly initiates an adaptive immune response against its own tissues, cells, and organs. Instead of targeting foreign pathogens, the immune system produces autoantibodies and autoreactive T-cells that attack endogenous components, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. In the context of hormonal health, this often manifests as endocrine gland destruction, exemplified by conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Type 1 diabetes.
