Autoimmune Thyroiditis

Meaning

Autoimmune Thyroiditis is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland, characterized by the immune system mistakenly launching an attack against the body’s own thyroid tissue. This progressive immune assault often leads to the destruction of thyroid follicular cells, resulting in a gradual but significant decline in the gland’s capacity to produce essential thyroid hormones. The clinical outcome is typically primary hypothyroidism, which requires lifelong hormone replacement therapy for management.
